Graeme Dott has stealthily been moving up the world rankings list year by year but has done so in a quiet manor, not receiving much press until the last few years.
Dott turned pro in 1994 but had a relatively slow, but always solid, start to his career. Moving from 190 to 58 to 33 then 30th but it was the 1998/99 when he really got into the swing of things, reaching the final of the Regal Scottish and compiling his first maximum in the first round of the British Open, procuring him the keys to a £20,000 sports car.
It then took him a further three seasons to take the elusive top-16 place he had always dreamed of, but he finally did it in the 2000/2001 season reaching 14th! 2001 started great for Graeme, as he reached the final of the British Open and the semis in the Regal Welsh but this fizzled out as he failed to win his opening match in four other ranking events. He finished the season with a first round win in the world championships but could do no better and ended his best season so far ranked 12th.
After this Greame lost his way a bit and has stayed there or thereabouts in the rankings. In the 2003/2004 season he started terribly, losing his first match in the opening four ranking events, and ended up smashing his cue. This was probably his best decision of the season so far as he then reached the quarters of the Irish Masters. Unfortunately, it still looked like he was going to lose his top-16 place before the world championships. He was 150/1 for the title but amazed everyone by reaching the final! Although losing 18-8 to Ronnie O'Sullivan after being 5-0 up he was overjoyed at his best tournament result yet and because it kept him in the top-16 (ranked 15th).
