Paul Hunter is probably most famous for “plan B” (cavorting with his wife in their hotel room before the final session), which helped him come from 6-2 behind to beat Fergal O’Brien 10-9 in the final of the 2001 Masters!
He sucessfully defended the title the following year, winning by exactly the same margin against Mark Williams after coming back from 5-0 down. After only reaching the semis in 2003, he was again in the Masters final (2004), once coming from behind (7-2 to O’Sullivan) to take the title 10-9 once again! He really likes to take it to the wire!
Before he turned pro, Hunter showed great promise, winning the Pontins Star of the Future under-16 event, and twice winning the Leicester Junior Open. In 1995 he turned pro and showed the world what he could do, reaching the semi-final of the Regal Welsh Open at only 17! He finished the season ranked 78, looking to climb furthur.
The next season he moved to number 43, and in the 1998/1999 season he made it into the top 16, ranked 12. He then had a bad couple of seasons, dropping in and out of the top 16. This seemed to give him a wakeup call and after a good season in 2001 he found himself moving up again, eventually breaking into the top 4 in 2004.
